Open Architecture Studio’s collaborative relationship with FKG Group continues with the delivery of the Gainsborough State School on the Gold Coast.
The design has a focus on community, with planning organised around a central spine. The spine starts at a generous arrival plaza and ends at a viewing platform overlooking the oval. The viewing platform provides covered space for students to gather, eat and play, with a raised stage area for concerts, events and impromptu performances.
Learning spaces branch off the central axis. The main general learning area building has a central courtyard with landscaped play areas visible from all circulation corridors, providing excellent passive surveillance.
Classrooms are organised in pairs, with each pair separated by an operable wall that allows for flexible teaching modes. Ample breakout spaces and seating across the campus encourage small group gatherings and support outside teaching and learning.
