Scarborough Harbour Brewery
Craft brewery builds prosperity in Moreton Bay
Location Scarborough, QLD (Kabi Kabi Country)
Client Scarborough Harbour Brewing Co.
Value $1.2 million
Size 320m²
Status Completed
Project Type Tourism & Culture
Open Architecture Studio is working with developer Jaimie Larson to transform an old function centre on the water's edge in Scarborough, north of Redcliffe, into an exciting craft brewery, restaurant and function venue.
In a clever adaptive re-use, the existing building will be wrapped in a wave-like facade that takes its cues from boat hulls and sails in the surrounding harbour. The new facade will create sheltered, outdoor dining spaces around the building's edges, and open at the front to reveal the activity and energy within.
Perforated metal overlays on the facade will provide sun protection during the day. At night, they will be lit from inside to create a glowing, architectural beacon.
In the venue’s interior, an industrial aesthetic in keeping with the location will use recycled timber and brick, concrete and feature exposed services. A copper pizza oven and steel brewing tanks will be the dramatic heroes.
Project benefits
The new venue will inject life into an old building and the surrounding precinct, creating new jobs and expanding Queensland's growing craft brewing industry. With its distinctive form, it will attract locals and visitors alike and become an important element of the client's brand.
